Music to my ears

Tuesday evening was Bookworm's violin recital. He has been working really hard on this piece. The technique and dynamics required for this particular song are pretty complicated for someone so young, but I think he nailed it!

Bookworm started taking violin lessons when he was 5. He had been begging for a violin since he was 2! We saw a toy one in a store once and he asked me what it was. I told him it was a violin, and from then on he would always ask me "when can I have a violin, mama?"

I was so reluctant, because you see I had this plan for my kids. For me, learning music is as important as learning reading and math. Since it is easier to switch from the piano to another instrument than it is to switch from another instrument to the piano, and since I wanted all of my children to learn the piano...my plan was that they would all take piano lessons when they were old enough (general recommendation from teachers I know is about 8 years old) then if thy wanted to learn another instrument as well, that would be fine too.

But this little boy was PERSISTENT! I finally looked into a violin rental agreement and several teachers. We found both that were reasonable and started him out on a trial basis. He's never looked back! Now 5 years later, we are still with his original violin teacher, and have now purchased his violin. This is his 3rd one, as you have to trade up sizes as they grow!

Sometimes he's lazy about practicing. But the deal is that if he doesn't want to play violin, that is fine, but if I'm paying for lessons and a violin ...he is darn well gonna practice! He has worked so hard on this piece and I hope you enjoy it! It's kind of long, but I think it's worth the time spent listening! Of course, I love music. I was kind of mad though, because I was so busy watching to make sure he got his position right, and the accompanist got his music, that I forgot to start recording until after he had already started playing...ARGH!

I was so very proud of him! And he was so pleased that his hard work paid off!

Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.

He sounds wonderful! Is he taking Suzuki method? I took Suzuki for about 8 years....I totally remember that song...he is playing it wonderfully! I need to get my violin out to play again...my son begged me to lay the clarinet in school band this year...and he wants me to play some songs along with him while he practices...I guess it's time to tune my violin up again! Thanks for reminding me and sharing the beautiful music....& quote...SO TRUE!

I saw your blog off of Jamie's...you have great stuff on here! Your son is a good violinist and has good tone! Keep up the great work of encouraging him. Music fills the soul.
OK. I have to admit it... when I saw that there was video, there was a little part of me that had my hands ready to clap over my ears, anticipating the screechy sound of a kid playing a violin. (Cuz that's all I've ever experienced.)
He's wonderful!

I actually played it twice (I left the screen open so I had music to check my email by...)
You must be so proud of him!
