Mod Podge Mania - not quite scrabble tile pendants

Aaaaaand we're BACK! Oh, how I've missed thee Mod Podge Mania! I've missed the challenge of completing a project each month to share, as well as the inspiration that comes from seeing the projects of others! Let's not part ways again, mmmkay?

This month's project has a little back story. Please bear with me. I have a sweet friend in my life, who is very young (23) and going through a real trial in her life. More than I've ever had to deal with, and especially at such a young age. A while back when she was really feeling heart-broken and discouraged, she posted a song on her facebook page. The name of the song was "A Little Bit Stronger". Knowing what she was going through, and listening to the song really tugged at my heartstrings. I sent her a text and she told me she was trying to be "a little bit stronger". I knew I wanted to give her a Christmas gift that had those words on it. I was thinking a piece of jewelry. Well we were on a pretty tight budget for Christmas this year, and a piece of hand-stamped, or engraved jewelry was just not in my price-range. I decided to look for a tutorial on making a pendant myself. I of course first hopped over to Tatertots and Jello and immediately found a post which contained a link to this tutorial. I decided that this was the way to go. However as Christmas drew nearer, and I still didn't have all the supplies I needed (some are really hard to find!), I decided I needed to improvise. And that is how this project came to be. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of the pendant before I gave it to her, so you'll just have to imagine how fabulous it was, okay? And she loved it BTW, and wears it all the time.

I had waited too long to order scrabble tiles online, so I decided to see how these would work. They are a little bit bigger than scrabble tiles, and also thinner. I love the different sizes, I'm going to make some bigger ones next time:
There are places online that you can order printables to use for your pendants, but I think some fun scrapbook paper is all you need, if you already have some on hand.
For pendants that say something specific, all you need to do is type it up yourself and print it onto some colorful paper. This is what I did with the "a little bit stronger" pendant.

If you decide to print up your own, and only have an ink-jet printer like me, make sure to spray some of this over the ink, and let it dry. This will keep the ink from smearing when you apply the mod podge over the top.
Which, by the way, is not called for in the tutorial, but I love working with Mod Podge, and decided to see how it would work out instead of using the craft glue to apply the paper. It worked like a charm. I applied a layer of Mod Podge to the wood square, and then placed my paper on and smoothed. Next I turned the square over, and used an X-acto knife to trim the excess paper around the wood. Then I turned it back over and added a layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper.

The tutorial calls for something called Diamond Clear, but Jen wasn't able to find any, and neither was I. She recommended this, and I love how it worked to add a top glossy coat over the pendent.

These little buggars are hard to find. I only had one small package, and my girls used all but one, so only one pendant is completely you just have to use your imagination for the others...okey dokey?
You can order them online, but I haven't gotten to it yet, so I used the last one for my first pendant, and then just strategically placed ribbon for the pictures of the other pendants. Pretend they're all finished though, will you?

I apologize for the horrible pictures, but it was night time. I did use the flash on this next picture, just because I wanted you to get a better view of the cute print of the paper I used.

Remember how I am always looking for anything with my initial? I actually have 2 blog friends who have made me "x" pendants for my birthday - and I love them. But I can always use another, right? They are all very different.

I love this pretty branch print - and especially how it looks with the brown ribbon!
You can also use the ball-chain necklaces for your pendants, which is what I did for the "a little bit stronger" pendant - I think they look great both ways.

Just a few tips if you decide to try this:

The tutorial says to use a light box for tracing. I don't have one, so I just eyeballed it. My graphics aren't perfectly centered - a lightbox would definitely solve this problem.

The tutorial says to use super glue to attach the silver bail to the pendant. I read in the comments that someone said E6000 works better. It doesn't. I learned the hard way and will start using the super glue from now on.

I adhere the paper with Mod Podge, let it dry, then attach the silver bail before applying the Triple Thick. Then you don't have to put any pressure on the finish by trying to glue the bail on afterward.

So I showed you mine, now you show me yours. Please tell me you've got a project to link up! I wanna see!

Remember to please link back to this post and make sure to visit as many other links as you can and leave them some comment love!

I confess....

Today I'm linking up to Friday's supposedly good for the soul.

I confess...

My level of maturity (and appropriateness) varies depending on who I'm with.

I confess...

I have secretly thrown away a pair of shoes and an ugly hat of my husband's that I hated, when he wasn't home.

I confess...

I don't always speak as appropriately as I should in front of my children. I am not a very good example sometimes!

I confess...

I almost sent my girls to have a sleepover with their grandma tonight, while my husband and son are at scout camp, just because I wanted to have the night and the house all to myself.

I confess...

I only skim-read the 16 chapters of material I was supposed to have read over the holiday break in preparation for my last night's school board meeting. And I did it just before the meeting. Then faked my way through the discussion.

I confess...

I have a sink full of dirty dishes, and I have no intention of washing them before I go to bed tonight.

I confess...

That as much as I love my girls, I am counting down the minutes until bedtime. I'm tired.

That's all I've got for you today, but I'm sure this next week will provide plenty of material for confessional next Friday. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Click the button for more confessions!!

A little less blah...

But still BLAH! Give me some sunshine and flowers!!

I did have a fun day hanging out with My mom and cousin J today. We had a fun day of window shopping and I even got some inspiration for my February Mod Podge Mania project! I am so excited to get started on it! But first to get things ready for this month. Don't forget the party starts on January 31st. I hope you'll all come party with me!

I didn't get around to visit everyone yesterday or today, but I will be catching up...promise! I will NOT become a blog-slacker again!

So who's been watching American Idol? What do you think of the new judges? I have always liked Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez. I was very curious to see them judge. I actually haven't watched AI for a couple of years, because it was opposite NCIS (one of my all time fave shows). Since I don't have DVR, it was either AI was the one sacrificed. I was excited to hear it moved to Wednesday instead of Tuesday - and was eager to watch this year. I think Steven is going to get on my nerves...we'll see. I'm loving Jennifer though. And I don't care what anyone says...Ryan Seacreast is freakin' adorable. LOVE him!!

Speaking of American Idol...who watched Season 2? Remember Kimberly Caldwell? She had that throaty, Stevie Nicks type of voice? Yeah, I really liked her. She even dated David Cook for awhile - did ya know that?

ANYWAY - last night I found this video of her new song and fell in LOVE with it! I love her voice, and this song is just so catchy! Check it out...tell me what ya think. case anybody's wondering - I typed this post while watching American Idol. Don't know if you could tell or not.

A bunch of nothing

I'm feeling particularly UNinspired today. Not sure why, just feeling blah. You know when you get that way? Wait, it's only me? Crap.

Perhaps it's because after some very balmy days of sun and nearing spring-like temperatures - we got a freakin' snow storm. Very depressing for a girl who has had enough of the white stuff, and is ready to see some bright cheery colors.

I'm feeling sort of stressed with a bunch of stuff sneaking up on me...with my church calling, as well as Pixie's 8th birthday. 8 is a big deal birthday in our family. She will be having a friend birthday party next Thursday, and then be baptized on Saturday, followed by a family celebration. Lots of stuff to plan, and it just sort of snuck up on me! So I have to get the invitations finished tonight, in order for her to be able to hand them out tomorrow!

I also have to make invitations for a primary event that need to be handed out...and then I need to get the birthday party supplies, and get the party put together. Add that to zero motivation, and you get stressed out, blah-feeling me.

I'm just a bucket full of laughs today, aren't I? Maybe if I could just get a little bit of sunshine I could shake the blah's and get going!

All you folks living in sunny states...could you send a little my way? Pretty please?

And all my hysterical blog about some hilarity in my inbox to make me laugh? I know ya'll are freakin' how about it? Make me laugh...I challenge you!

Hope everybody is enjoying their week. Be back tomorrow with less blahs....promise!

Just can't live without you....

What are you just NOT willing to give up - Even for the sake of losing weight? That's what Shortmama asks today.

If you've been around for even a little while - you know of my deep and abiding love for Dr. Pepper. Our love affair is so epic that I even got THIS for Christmas from the ever fabulous Tanielle. Yeah, she totally loves me.

I cannot bring myself to give it up. Although I HAVE abstained since New Years Day. That's pretty good for me. I mentioned previously that I have decided to limit my DP drinking to times when I am out to dinner, or somewhere special with hubby. Which will be rare since we hardly ever get a chance to go out!!

The other thing that I just won't sacrifice is salt. I love salt. Salty food is my weakness. I would pass up chocolate cake for french fries any day of the week. I know salt is soooo bad for you, blah, blah, blah.

It can cause high blood pressure. I have the lowest blood pressure ever. Seriously. I have never had high blood pressure in my life. Actually I did ONCE. It was when I had my shoulder issue. If you want all the painful details click here. The doctor said the high pain level had increased my blood pressure. It quickly dropped when the pain was lessened.

Other than that I have such good blood pressure that I actually get COMPLIMENTS when I'm pregnant and go in for my check ups. Seriously like - "what perfect blood pressure you have...good job!" As if I had accomplished this great feat. So blood pressure - not really a worry of mine.

Salt can also cause water retention. I counter that by drinking TONS of water. It makes me pee a LOT - so I'm pretty sure that diminishes or eliminates the water retention issue. At least that's what I tell myself.

So far I have only missed one Saturday of exercising since Kimberly and I started walk/running together. We also take Sundays off. But I'm feeling great about our progress, and my personal commitment! 5 K here we come! And also...CUTE CLOTHES! Oh yeah...and better health. :)

What are you just not willing to go without? Head over to Shortmama's and link up!

What's on my mind today...

Okay...seriously? I cannot BELIEVE this is an actual ad. But I saw it. With my own eyes. Right in the middle of watching my beloved NCIS. I laughed so hard - like in disbelief.

Now don't get me wrong - I know this is a serious issue. But really? Who WROTE this?

I KNOW right?

In other news...I'm joining the revolution! The down with "No Reply Blogger" movement.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Read this over at Mamarazzi then!

And seriously...enable your settings to allow me to respond to your comments via email! Mamarazzi explains it all, and how you can fix it! I really wanna be able to reply when I love what you have to say!

I'm off to a budget meeting for the school now. I know that sounds boring...but I really, REALLY love the people I get to associate with when I go. I consider them all friends outside of just our school lunch! What could be better?

Just another little reminder about Mod Podge Mania on January 31. I think I might have said January 30 in a previous post(s)...but I'm just an idiot that way sometimes. January here!!

Say my name, Say my name....and other business

Well, if I were to get a dollar for every time I have been asked how to pronounce my name since I've started blogging...I'd be able to get Cowgirl's bedroom finished no problem!! I know I have tried to type it out phonetically for people, but it just looks weird. I mean, I know it already DOES look weird anyway...but hey - my mom's fault. Not mine.

So many inquiries have not received a suitable reply. I decided that ya'll needed to just HEAR someone say it. So, I enlisted the aid of my favorite Monkey, and here you have it:

Just in case you didn't catch it: hoz-meen

This name has been the curse of my life. I am not even kidding. The nicknames the boys came up with to tease me...I had one that followed me all the way through High School! It was given to me by a group of boys when a substitute in Middle School (don't even get me STARTED on the hell that was getting a new teacher for the first time, or having a substitute) slaughtered my name during role call. Then followed me to High School. I then had boys who didn't even go to Middle School with us start calling me that! And the final proof is in my yearbook from SENIOR year when someone who didn't even know how I GOT that nick name wrote it in my yearbook when he signed it. It wasn't a mean nick name - just making fun of the way the teacher pronounced it, and it stuck. Love you mom - and I know you love my name and are so proud of it - but I'm just saying like it is...from my perspective!

Now that that item of business is out of the way, here's a few more:

Want to play a fun blog game with the possibility of winning a great prize? Check THIS out.

Want to win a Silhouette cutting machine? There are 3 different giveaways going on: here, here, and here! I KNOW, right? 3 chances to win! But I would really appreciate it if you didn't click any of the links, cuz I really, REALLY wanna win!

I think that's everything for today...Don't forget Mod Podge Mania coming up January 30! Hope you all have a fabulous project planned to share!

Muffin top to skinny jeans - motivation

Yes, I am far too lazy and beat to come up with an original title, so I just copied Shortmama's pretty much word for word

Today she asks us what motivates us. I've already mentioned that I am motivated by vanity. Particularly my desire to wear cute clothes, and have them actually STILL look cute on me!
I have shown in the past some fun sets I put together on Polyvore. Here's my favorite one. I would LOVE to wear something like this this summer:

The other thing that motivates me...and I know this is really weird, and I know they say not to do this. But I weigh my self every day. I'm sort of obsessive about it. I weigh myself at the same time every day. If the scale has gone up at all, it motivates me to do better that day than I did the day before. If it goes down, I am super encouraged and motivated to keep the momentum going. So either way I feel motivated.

On the other hand, when I wait for a week before weighing myself, I feel super discouraged if the number is up at all, or only down a little. I think all WEEK and this is my result? So the daily weigh-in really works much better for me. I told you it was weird. And this was a really boring post. I mean more boring than my usual boring-ness. Sorry.

So what motivates you? I'm headed over to Shortmama's to link up, and see what motivates others!

I'm Ready!

Stuff I'm sick of....

Stuff I miss...

Girl's night...
at the soccer game.

Camping. (look how little Bookworm was - he's so tall now!)

Date the soccer game. (Doesn't my husband look thrilled to be with me?)

Porch swings and tee-shirts.

Chris Wingert...

At the soccer game (yes I took a picture of him from behind - so?)

Sunflowers (these are the gorgeous one's from Tanielle's yard).

Roasting Marshmallows.

Is anybody else longing for warmer temperatures and outside fun?

Braving the Arctic Tundra...

All I can say is, I better be wearing this outfit soon! If you read that post you know I have some exercise goals I've set for myself for this year. I think they are great goals, and I think I set up a good plan to achieve them. Now on to the execution.

Yesterday my friend Kimberly and I set out for our first day of "training" to get ready for a 5k we'd like to be able to run in June. Neither of us have ever been in any type of race. It was cold, but we were very enthusiastic! Even when we realized that over HALF the walkways were not cleared, so it was actually more like snowshoeing...we pressed forward! We just figured we were burning more calories trudging over the slippery, uneven terrain, so it was sorta a bonus, right?

Of course by this morning I felt as if I had been beat with a 2x4 across my hips and lower back. But it was all good. I got my kids off to school then geared up for another day of calorie burning! Now first let's get a shot of what it looks like out my front door right now:

Here's us:
I headed over to Kimberly's house to meet her. Then off we went. Yesterday it was about 27 degrees when we went. Today it seemed a bit colder. We made it to our turning around point in fairly decent time. Then turned and headed back. Right. into. the WIND. It was ferocious! So. Freakin'. Cold.

We continued on for a bit, mostly in silence because our lips were too numb to form words. Finally she mentioned that her feet were really hurting, because the wind was cutting right into her shoes. I asked her if she'd like me to call hubby and have him come get us. She said yes please. So I call him, and we keep moving on toward home. It took him forfreakinever! We still made it 1/2 the way back before he finally got to us.

In the meantime, as we're trudging on, Kimberly's foot goes numb, and I start having the oddest, most unpleasant sensation in my eyes. They were blurry, stinging, and at the same time icy cold with prickly sensations sorta poking them. I couldn't blink or rub away the discomfort. Then I realized what was happening. I wear hard contact lenses, and people --- my contacts were getting FROST on them! As in forming little ice-crystals!!! Kimberly confided in me that she never wanted to see my husband so bad in her life as she did at that moment!!

He finally arrived, and picked us up and then commented "I don't know what your problem is, it's only TWELVE degrees outside!" I had no idea it was so cold this morning, but I have to say, even though we didn't finish the route, I felt pretty proud that we went probably about 3 miles in 12 degree temps!

Hey, I said we were enthusiastic, not bright. I hope it pays off! It's supposed to be warmer tomorrow, so I'm in!

FMM - Resolutions

FRIEND MAKIN" MONDAY!!! Okay, I just had to yell that. Because I used to participate EVERY week, and I loved it. In fact, some good blog friends, whom I actually now consider close real friends whom I just haven't met in person, were first found through FMM.

It has been such a long time, but I am so glad to be participating again.

This week's topic is resolutions.

I already shared some fitness goals here.

But something I really, REALLY would like to accomplish this year? I'd like to love my home.

Now don't get me wrong, I am SO grateful to have a roof over my head. To have a space for my family that is warm and safe. So please know that I am not trying to sound ungrateful. I know that there are many who don't own a home, or even have a place to stay.

But I don't love my house. It is old, and dated, and is falling apart cosmetically. If you've known me from my early blogging days you know that the bane of my existence is the barforamic pink carpet in my living room. The work done by the previous owner was a bunch of half-a%$ed work that is falling apart. Wallpaper in the bathroom that immediately started peeling. So I decided to rip it down and paint. Only then I got pregnant, and lost my momentum. I now have a bathroom stripped to the drywall, and the linoleum is coming up by the tub. And the kitchen. Ew. That's all. Sky blue and white color scheme. With the upper cabinets painted white, and the lower ones blue. And the most horrid border around the top you have ever seen. Plus the border is falling down. Gag.

I'm not going to keep complaining. But this year I would like to make some improvements to my house, that will help me love my home. I don't have a bunch of (or any) extra cash laying around to do this. So to accomplish this goal, I also need to accomplish my shared goal with my husband of expanding our business and increasing our income. 2009 was rough for us self-employed types. 2010 showed some good improvement (at least for us), and I'd like to see 2011 bring us at LEAST to where we were in 2008, but preferably even better.

I would like to try to start setting a small amount of money aside periodically that I can then use to make some of the changes that will help me be happier with my house. Lucky for me I have some amazing friends with mad skills at thrifty decorating, and some FABULOUS inspiration in blog land. Wish me luck!

Did you make any resolutions? If so, what are they? Head over to All The Weigh and link up to share and see what others have planned for 2011!

Everybody's doing it...

So it's that day of the week, AND that time of year. I'm talking about when we discuss our goals/progess with the battle to turn muffin tops to skinny jeans (even though I actually canNOT get on the skinny jean bandwagon and will stick with my bootcuts, thank you very much).

This week Shortmama asks us about our health goals for 2011. What we'd like to achieve and how we are going to get there.

I of course want to lose weight, as well as get healthier. I have lost a significant amount of weight in the past. I loved how empowered I felt, and how I enjoyed every aspect of life so much more. Sadly, I was struck with a horrible case of bronchitis, which Cowgirl then caught which developed into a 5 day hospital stay for her with viral pneumonia, followed by the shocking death of a young family member, then the holidays, then my pregnancy with Monkey! I'm not looking for sympathy, or to make excuses. Just wanting to illustrate how easily life can derail you, even when you're on a great role. This time I plan to not let life derail me, no matter what it throws my way!

Here are some goals/steps I am putting into place this year!

I would like to get back to running daily. I have a sweet friend K who has committed to start working toward this goal with me starting Monday. She is much younger and skinner than me - but she has Asthma - so maybe that will put her a little more on my level! Hehe.

We will start out walking, and then run short intervals, gradually increasing the time spent running, and decreasing the time spent walking. Hopefully within a few months we'll be running the whole time!

We have decided a great way to motivate ourselves is to look for a 5K in the area and register - once you've paid for something, you're a lot more motivated to train for it!!

I also have decided to go back to my previous Dr. Pepper policy (you know how I love my DP), No DP while I'm at home, or just running errands. I'll only allow myself if I am out to dinner, or a similar special occasion. There's no way I'm giving it up completely though!

Now I have told you before that I am motivated by vanity as much as (more than) health. I love clothes. I love cute clothes. Cute clothes lose their cuteness when they are in my size. Weird how that happens.

I also love soccer. ReAL Salt Lake soccer to be specific. Soccer season starts in March, and continues late into the fall. I have mentioned my obsession with creating sets on Polyvore before. I combined my love of RSL soccer, and cute clothes and came up with this set. I WANT to wear this to a game! I won't look good in it by March, but I sure would love to wear it to a game by the end of summer! What do you think? Isn't it sooooo freakin' sporty and cute?

I know that's sort of a lame, shallow goal. But sometimes I am lame, and shallow. Just sayin'.

What are your goals? I'll be sharing my progress along the more slacking off on THIS or my blogging anymore! Hope your 2011 is great so far!

Don't know what you got...'til it's gone.

Happy New Year! I posted on my Facebook status, at 1 a.m. New Year's Day that I was going to blog regularly. That was my New Year's Resolution. Then my modem promptly died.

I was ITCHING to blog! I was down for 5, yes that's 5 DAYS! There was of course no business services from our provider on New Years Day. Or Sunday. So when we finally got help on Monday, and they determined it was the modem, they told us it would be here by Wednesday. UGH! And I waited all. day. long. It did not arrive until this evening. So mean! I truly came to appreciate my access to the wonderful world of blogging, once I didn't have access!

I first need to start off the New Year by apologizing to my wonderful California blog friends, who also happen to be Facebook friends. You see, there was this little online competition. Walmart was awarding $1 million to the Foodbank of the city that got the most support on Facebook. Salt Lake climbed first to 3rd place, then steadily to first. By a LOT! Then one morning I woke up and WHAT? Fresno was in first place. By a LOT! This is where the apology kicks in. I may have gotten a little crazy (and Hubby believes this is the reason for the Modem crash), and started a full fledged facebook campaign to put Utah back in the lead. And I may have, in the spirit of motivating my fellow Utahns, talked a little smack - you know about not wanting to be beaten by California.

The thing is, besides my blog friends - I have wonderful real life friends and family whom I love in California! And I think it's a BEAUTIFUL state! But I've begun to realize that I may have an issue, with being competitive (competitiveness?). And California happens to be the state that holds the thorns in my side in my two other most prevalent areas of competitiveness. Soccer (L.A. Galaxy), and Basketball (Lakers, anyone?). So please. Accept my apology - I truly love Californians ( the ones that I know)!!

Moving on.

I am also bringing back Mod Podge Mania! If you don't know what that is - it's because I'm a slacker. Just be prepared. Last day of the month - it's a linky fest to show off great Mod Podge Projects. Fun for showing your fabulousness, as well as getting ideas from the fabulousness of others! It was one of my favorite things I used to do when I was a blogging machine!

I have lots of great ambitions for the new year. First off a room for Cowgirl. This Is The Year... we will get a room in the basement finished and turned into a fabulous bedroom for our sweet 10 year old, who SO deserves her own room, after years of sharing with 2 little sisters who get into her stuff, and break it and lose it.

I'll be posting progress along the way.

Here's what we're starting with. The previous owners of our home sheetrocked one room in the basement. It just happened to be the room next to the rain gutter spout. Yeah, the spout that happened to drain directly into the window well. Hence we got water in the basement a few times with melting snow, or heavy rain. And I'm sure they did too. When we went to start finishing off Cowgirl's room in the fall, and moved the boxes away from the wall, we were greeted with THIS lovely sight:

HELLO black mold! Nice and healthy. Love that we've been breathing this for who knows how long.

Lucky I'm married to a big strong, bio-hazard conquering HERO!
I helped a little too. I know - I look totally hot.
He tore out all the sheetrock from the bottom half of the wall, then all the insulation. What a guy.
When that was done, he treated the whole area with - well, I don't know what it's called, but it's what they spray to kill mold spores and disinfect the wood and the cement. See - being married to a carpet cleaning guru has it's advantages! Not only is he sexy cleaning my carpets, but he has all sorts of useful skills when it comes to disaster clean-up. (and hiring someone for that is freakin' EXPENSIVE!!)

Now I am busy going through the rest of the crap in our basement, and getting rid of stuff, and making way for the handymen to come in and do the electrical, and heating ducts so we can hang the drywall. Stay tuned. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

What big plans do you have for 2011? Hope it is rocking so far!
