Friend Makin' Monday and Recipe Swap

It's Monday! Time to make some new friends, and learn more about old (relatively) ones! Today Kasey has asked us to share the best piece of advice we have ever received.

Mine is really simple. When I got married I was only out of high school a year. I was still living with my parents, and besides a small car payment, really didn't have a lot of financial obligations. My dad had a little heart to heart with me before the wedding. The one thing that has always stuck with me from that conversation was simply this:

If you can't afford to pay cash for it, you don't need it.

He went on to elaborate a little, and explained that of course there were a very few things like a car, or a home that we wouldn't be able to pay cash for, and credit would be necessary. But he basically counseled me to keep in mind that other than these few exceptions, if there was something we wanted, or felt like we needed that we couldn't afford to pay for in full, then we should make due without until we could afford it.

I am so grateful that in this time of economic uncertainty I can say that my vehicles are paid off, I only have one mortgage on my home, and I have no credit card debt. We're not rollin' in the dough by any means, and I don't have my home fixed up as beautiful as all the ones I admire in the magazines, but I hear all these stories on the news of people drowning in credit card debt and am grateful that I don't have that kind of burden weighing me down at this time. Thanks DAD!

Recipe Swap!

I found a great new Linky Fest going on over at Learning Together Hand in Hand. It's a recipe swap! I've been a major slacker at posting my recipes of the week, so thought this would be a good way to keep me on the ball, plus get some great new recipes to try out! This is the easiest meal you will ever make (aside from cold cereal!). It is tasty and filling! What could be easier than dumping 6 cans into a pot and bringing to a boil?

6 Can Chicken Tortilla Soup

1 can chicken
2 cans chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes with green chilies
1 can black beans (I rinse mine)
1 can corn

Combine contents of all cans in pot and bring to a boil. Top with crumbled tortilla chips, cheddar cheese, and a dollup of sour cream! It is seriously delish! I always get tons of compliments.

*This recipe is also great without the toppings for those who are trying to lose weight - I love that when I make this I can actually eat the same dinner as my family, just without the toppings! I usually make their food, then make my less than delicious low cal crap.

If you try it out, I'd love to know how you like it! Have a recipe to share? Go here to link up.

I hope everyone had a beautiful Easter, and is having a wonderful Monday!

Great recipe, thanks for sharing. I love a "dollop" of sour cream! It is such a great word!
Your dad is a smart guy!!! :) I enjoyed reading more about you today. Great recipe too. Thanks! :)
Very wise advice! So very few people follow it and look at the mess that so many are in.

Noone told me the advice your dad gave you but I figured it out after my exhusband screwed up my credit. I am proud to say that my husband and I own 4 cars, all paid for except my new car which I have been agressively paying on and it will be paid off within 1 yr of purchasing. We have no credit card debt either. This is actually something thats hard to be proud of since you read sooooo many others that are in bad shape. I guess proud isnt the right word....you cant talk about it.
Rambled enough?

That is our thing -- if you can't pay cash don't buy it!

Thanks for playing along and sharing! I love anything with Chicken! Sounds good!

Very sound financial advice, which we also follow.

Mmmm......that soup sounds good, especially for this cool day we're having here. Hope to try it soon and thanks for sharing!
Hey Xazmin,

Loved the tortilla soup!! So did my family. Paul was impressed -- so I am glad he wasn't home to watch me make it. I let him think it took me awhile, not just 2 seconds to dump cans!

I love tortilla soup! It's cold and raining again today...sounds perfect! I'll go check the pantry!

That really is awesome advice. My dad died when I was 14. I did not receive any good, solid money advice. It's never too late to learn it. Unfortunately we do have CC Debt. No car payments though! (3 cars) We are doing Dave Ramsey's plan to get rid of the debt...Never going to use CC AGAIN...they are evil!

6 cans, dump, stir and heat sounds EXACTLY like my kind of recipe!
I linked to your blog from Kasey's...what a fabulous idea! Your Dad is exactly right...imagine how much you have saved by not doing the spur of the moment, pull out the card buys!

Great advise. That is pretty much what I'm trying to teach my kids. Unfortunately...their dad doesn't share the same idea. That soup sounds wonderful also, I think I'll try that.

YES YES YES ON THE ADVICE!!!!

That is perfect and something that my parents taught me. My husband and I try to budget for just about anything we want to buy or do...

Great advice from your very WISE dad!

The recipe sounds super easy and yummy!! I love tortilla soup!

Happy Monday!
Amen to that sound financial advice. I think that being disciplined about money actually promotes creativity. If money grew on trees, would you be having fun making cute things like your button napkin rings, or would you be online with your credit card?
You had more fun for less money. Perfect plan.
:-)
I have a chicken chili recipe that is similar. I want to try yours. Maybe I'll post mine. Nothing is better that good and easy!
Have a great week!
(Oh, and I answered your question from my comments: Eva LaRue)

Great advice. My dad instilled the same kind of thoughts into me (unfortunately I'm not sure my brother or sister were listening too well!). It's nice to know there's someone looking out for us.

Yay! For the chicken tortilla soup recipe. You might think I'm lying to you when I say this, but I have that in the crockpot as I type. No joke! Instead of 2 cans chicken broth, I do 1 chicken broth and 1 cream of chicken. So good...can't wait for dinner tonight!

Great advice! We have been living by it for about 10 years now, it's really the only way to go. and may I say - Girl - what a view you have! Oh to have such pretty mountains surrounding me, I might just forget how much I love the beach! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier :-)
Great advice and a great recipe -- you're a one-stop shop!!
That is some great advice. We are awful with credit cards and rely on them way too much. Just when we finally had them paid all the way down, my husband's corp. went bankrupt and he was laid off for a year. (This was quite awhile ago but we are still trying to dig out from under)
What great advice and so true! And thanks for the recipe. Perfect for me -- fast and simple!

XOXO

Hand Made for Fall - A party and a Giveaway!

I've been a busy girl! I have been wanting to do a giveaway for Fall, and when my fab friend Heidi revealed that her Monthly Craft Challenge for October would be Fall-themed crafts, I thought "YES! I will do a giveaway of Fall items - handmade by me!" So today I'm linking up with Heidi , and introducing my Handmade For Fall Giveaway as I show you what I've made for Heidi's party ! Sound good? First, a while back I showed you some coasters that I made, but it was clear back when I first started blogging, so I'm going to show you again with this new seasonal set! This idea has been floating around blog land, and I've seen several different variations. Here's how I do it. You will need: paper napkins, 4x4 ceramic tiles, 4x4 cork squares, MOD PODGE (what else?), sponge brushes (not shown), and polyurethane (not shown). Start by cutting your napkin down to a manageable size, slightly bigger than your tile. Next spread a layer of mod podg onto the t

Post about a project on your blog, along with instructions on how you created your mod podge masterpiece! OR you can do a post featuring a project you have seen someone else do, just to pass the idea along. Just make sure you give credit where credit is due! Also, make sure to include a link back to my blog in your post! Next, link up by entering your name and copying the URL to your post into Mr. Linky - he's waiting at the bottom of this post. It would be helpful if you put the name of your project along with your name so people will know what they are coming to look at!
