Cremation? What do you think?

Disclaimer:  My family speaks very candidly about death, and other topics that some may find morbid.  Sorry.

So my mom recently informed us that she has decided to be cremated when she dies.

Really?

The rest of us aren't really sure how we feel about this decision.  I mean, I know it's not like she'll be doing anything with her body anytime soon after she's six feet under.  But I always thought it would still exist, you know?  And she'd have a nice little grave marker that said something lovely about her, that we could bring flowers to on special days, or just because.  I mean I don't think about it OFTEN, but I guess I just didn't think of her as being a pile of ashes in a vase after she was gone.  You know?

But she insists that it is just too expensive to buy a burial plot in a cemetery, purchase a casket, pay for a grave marker.  And she is being stubborn. So I'm thinking about looking into some senior burial insurance, or maybe finding out more on Social Security.  I mean, if she's dead, what can she do about it?  We can pretty much do what we want at that point, right?

Except she would probably haunt us.  Not probably - she WOULD.  That's okay.  I ain't scared of no ghost!  You totally have that song in your head now, right?  You're welcome.

So what do you think of cremation vs. burial?

Comments

I don't know how I feel, but I do know that my mom plans on being cremated too. We've, obviously, been talking a lot about plans lately too. I guess the way I feel? I don't know. I guess I just don't feel that the person is "there" anymore. You know? I don't spend a lot of time at the cemetery because my brother-in-law just isn't "there" to me. If I want to talk to him, I don't feel like I have to go there to do it. So I guess, cremation or burial, it doesn't really matter to me. Whew. This is a hard subject right now.

If you are cremated you can still bury it. My mom wants to be cremated and then put on top of my dad who wants to be in a casket. She thinks it would be funny if they stuck her right over his face.
How morbidly disgusting is that?

I really can't decide how I feel. I guess I'll just respect my parents wishes...but I agree that it's nice to have a place to go to "visit" them after they are gone. Something about knowing they were buried there...

Plus, with the whole cremation thing...I totally keep thinking about the scene in "Meet The Parents" when he knocks the urn off the mantel and the ashes spill all over...CREEPY!!!

My mom is the same way.... she wants to be cremated. She is claustraphobic and swears she will haunt us for ever and ever if we bury her in the ground.

Hi Xazmin,
Greetings from Jamaica. I am a new Follower of your Blog. Congratulations on being the featured guest on Flock Together Tuesday. Cremation is also something that my family has never considered. So far I have lost my father when I was 13, my twin sister in 2008 and last December my brother Sutcliffe. In my country a number of persons and their families have opted for cremation. Take care and have a good week.

I guess I just have always planned on being burried but yea I think it would be weird if my parents said they wanted to be cremated just because I wouldn't expect it.

My dad has always said that he doesn;t want to be buried because why would anyone want to be stuck down there. He wants to be creamated & spread over his favorite hunting spot up in the woods. He wants to be free & be somewhere he loves. Makes sense to me!

I plan to be cremated
I want to be cremated because I am horribly claustrophobic, and the idea of my shell buried in a box underground gives me the willies. I'd rather have my ashes sprinkled around the places that I loved to be during my life. My loved ones can "visit" me in those places.

From my point of view, cremation and ash scattering ceremony can have advantages such as prevention of overcrowding at burial sites and it can be cost effective than traditional burial practices.
